User

Refers to the person performing the action, independent of his or her workflow task.

For ease of reading, this guide uses the male gender as a general reference to all genders.

Agent

Indicates the user that scanned a workflow task.

Work item

In this publication, you will find the terms "work item" and "document." "Document" is used as a generic term. It describes an object that contains all the necessary data for carrying out and documenting business processes.

"Work item," on the other hand, refers specifically to a document that is in a workflow task. Whenever the work item is outside the workflow – in a cancellation or archiving step, for instance – it is called a "document."
